What happened
Spain's Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities, through the Secretary General for Universities, published the provisional resolution of the University Teacher Training grants (FPU) for the 2025 call on 22 July 2026. It is the step that thousands of predoctoral applicants had been waiting on for months: the one that ranks, on a still non-final basis, who is in, who is on the reserve list, and who is out.
The call had been published by Order of 30 December 2025, and the application window ran from 16 January to 14 February 2026. Since then, the committee evaluation process has run its course to reach this provisional list, which now opens a short window to submit appeals before the resolution becomes final.
The word provisional matters. A provisional resolution awards nothing definitively. It is a proposal that can still be corrected if material errors, miscalculated scores or wrongly assessed documentation come to light. That is why the appeals period is not a formality but the only chance to have a case reviewed before the numbers are locked in.
The figures
FPU 2025 offers 870 grants, of which 43 are reserved for applicants with a disability of 33 percent or higher. These are predoctoral contracts of up to four years, aimed at completing a doctoral thesis and starting out in teaching duties. The call sets the minimum funding for each contract at 25,116 euros per year, and includes the option of a mobility stay of one to three months during the contract period.
The provisional resolution contains the list of selected applications and the reserve list. In previous years, most places are filled with the highest-scoring applications, and the rest move through the reserve lists as withdrawals occur. Withdrawals are common because many applicants compete in parallel for other schemes, such as project-linked predoctoral contracts (FPI) or regional programmes.
The appeals window opened with publication and, as several universities have already told their applicants, the practical deadline sits around 31 July 2026, in line with the ten working days that resolutions of this kind usually set. Anyone with doubts about their score should confirm the exact deadline in the Ministry's electronic office and with their host university.
What it means for researchers
If your application is listed as selected, the immediate work is administrative and time-bound: coordinate the acceptance of the grant with your university and make sure the admission or pre-admission certificate for the doctoral programme is in order. Several universities have asked applicants to process those certificates in the first days after the resolution so that later deadlines are not at risk. August is a poor month to leave paperwork pending, so clearing it beforehand is the sensible call.
If you are on the reserve list, the game is not over. Withdrawals shift the lists over the following weeks, so it is worth having your documentation ready and responding quickly if your university reaches out. And if you believe your score does not reflect your merits, the appeals window is now: go through, item by item, how your record, publications, research stays and every other section were assessed, and document any discrepancy with concrete evidence before the window closes.
There is a recurring lesson here, call after call. Applicants who reach these dates with an ordered track record, with merits verified and documentation ready, appeal better and accept faster. Keeping a maintained CV and having your evidence at hand is not cosmetic: it is what lets you react within hours when a reserve list moves or a calculation needs to be challenged. At Reservoir we work on exactly that idea, storing a career once and re-projecting it whenever a call demands it, so that the paperwork does not depend on memory or on a last-minute rush.
